The Centre for South-East European Studies, SSEES/UCL, has organized a
two-day conference to be held in London on 7-8 June 2002 to examine the theme of Balkan Masculinities.

Popular perceptions in the West have long imagined the Balkans as
characterised by a particular type of masculinity: primitive, violent and <= BR> patriarchal. The bandit, the guerrilla or paramilitary, even the
unreconstructed Balkan male drinking in the kafana while his wife works
-
all these are stereotypes that occur repeatedly in travel literature,
journalism and popular accounts about the region. The notion of a
culturally and historically determined ideal of manliness and heroism
has been used to explain everything from the character of Balkan political =
institutions, to the persistence of traditional 'backward' social and
economic patterns, to the violence of conflict in the region, most
recently in the Yugoslav wars.  But is this an accurate picture of the=
character and role of masculinity in the Balkans?  Has a particular id= eal
of masculinity been a static element in Balkan society and culture, or
have there been competing models of manliness?   How have such de= finitions
changed or been challenged? How have ideas of masculinity been used to
legitimate political ideologies; to mobilize populations; to police dissent=
or non-conformity; to recruit soldiers, citizens, religious personnel? = ; And
just how specific to the Balkans are such ideals or practices?
These and other questions will be addressed by participants from across the=
region, Britain, Western Europe and the U.S.

Speakers will include, among others:
Aleksandar Stulhofer (University of Zagreb), on a macro-sociological
analysis of values (is 'Balkan masculinity' an imaginary academic construct= ?)
Marko Zivkovic (Reed College, USA) on the poetics of masculinity in Serbia =
(and how to get at it)
Nicola Mai (University of Sussex), on Albanian masculinities, sex-work and =
migration
Jelka Vince-Pallua (University of Zagreb), on Balkan 'sworn virgins'
Mihai Razvan-Ungureanu (University of Iasi), on marriage and masculinity in=
19th-century Moldavia Tasoula Vervenioti (University of Athens), on men and=
women in arms in the Greek resistance and civil war

A full programme and registration form are available on the CSEES website <= BR> (www.ssees.ac.uk/musko.htm).  There will be a conference dinner, and <= BR> opportunities to see and purchase recent publications in South-East
European studies.  For further information on the programme, contact t= he
conference convenors (Wendy Bracewell, Jelka Vince-Pallua, Nicola Mai,
Stephanie Schwandner-Sievers) at musko@ssees.ac.uk.  The conference is=
suported by a grant from the British Academy, and by the South-East
European Studies Association, in cooperation with CSEES.
